While Odysseus has been away from home, I’ve been sitting here on Mount Olympus watching his every move. It has been around twenty years that I’ve been doing this. My brother Poseidon hasn’t really helped Odysseus along his way. He caused Odysseus trouble sailing. My nephew, the Cyclops, ate some of Odysseus’ great men. I feel, as the almighty Zeus, I should have stepped in but it’s hard going against other gods that are affecting Odysseus along his journey. I watched Odysseus through his ups and downs. Although he has messed up in the past, I can’t do anything but forgive him.

Everyone has done things wrong in their life, even I have. I cannot hold it against Odysseus forever. I had to save him from Calypso. I forced Calypso to let Odysseus leave, that way he could go back to his family. I knew that Odysseus’ wife and son needed him back home. The suitors were unwelcomed guests that were stealing from his family. The only way to get rid of the suitors was to help him. I knew his wife and son couldn’t get rid of them alone. I encouraged my daughter, Athena the goddess of wisdom and military defenses, to use her wisdom and come up with a plan to help Odysseus overcome the suitors.

When Odysseus got home, after twenty years, he had not only got rid of the suitors, but prove to his wife that it was actually himself. Penelope had a test to not only string the bow but to shoot the arrow through TWELVE axe handles. She knew that no one else could do it. I had to make sure the weather was right, I knew Odysseus had to be able to do it. I wanted to make sure Penelope knew that it was for sure Odysseus. So once I had made the weather just perfect for him I shot down a lightning bolt so Telemachus and Odysseus knew that it was time. Once Odysseus in disguise as a beggar passed, I could see the look on his wife’s face that she knew it was him. She couldn’t say anything, no one could. I had my daughter watch over Odysseus to make sure nothing happened to him while he had to kill all of the suitors. Anyhow, if any of the suitors would’ve gotten out, either myself, or one of the gods would have taken care of them. If you know what I mean. I know if I wouldn’t have helped Odysseus he wouldn’t be back with his family. One day I hope he’ll thank me.
